The Nature And Variety Of Organisms Flashcards
Tissue
A group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function. Eg xylem tissue
Organ
A group of different tissues that work together to perform a function.
Organ system
A group of organs that work together to perform a particular function
Eukaryotic cells, and eukaryotes
Cells that contain a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. Found in multicellular organisms such as animals, plants and fungi.
Prokaryotic cells, prokaryotes
Simple cells that lack a nucleus and other membrane bound organelles, do have ribosomes, plasmids(extra bits of DNA), circular chromosome, cell wall and membrane.
eg bacteria.
Heterotrophs
Animals are heterotrophs meaning they have to get their energy from other organisms
Autotrophs
Get energy from the sun, produce their own food
Saprotrophs
Eg most fungi, feed using saprophytic nutrition (secrete digestive enzymes, and absorb broke down nutrients)
Protoctists
-Single called organism
-have a eukaryotic cell (have a nucleus and some are like plant cells some are like animal cells
Pathogens
Organisms that cause disease include some fungi, bacteria and bacteria. Viruses are also pathogens.
Eg
Protoctist- plasmodium, causes malaria
Bacterium- pneumococcus, causes pneumonia
Viruses- influenza virus, causes flu
Population
All the organisms of one species in a habitat
Community
All the different species in a habitat
Ecosystem
All the organisms living in a particular area and all the non-living conditions
Abiotic factors
Non living factors eg environmental conditions and toxic chemicals
Biotic factors
Availability of food, number of predators, competition
