The Muscular System Flashcards
1
Q
Functions of the muscular system
A
- Movement
- Posture
- Maintains bodily Functions (breathing, digestion + supports circulatory system)
2
Q
Characteristics of the muscular system
A
- Excitability - muscles can be stimulated to react
- Contractibility - muscles can shorten
- Extensibility - muscles can lengthen
- Atrophy - muscles will decrease if not used
- Hypertrophy - muscles will increase when trained
3
Q
Types of muscles
A
- Voluntary, muscles that we consciously control
- Involuntary, maintain our bodily processes (also known as smooth muscles).
- Cardiac , are involuntary muscles (striped muscles in wall of heart that makes up tissue called myocardium)
4
Q
Muscle contractions
A
Muscular and nervous system work together to produce movement. Messages are sent from the brain to the muscles so that they can contract or contract.
5
Q
Types of contractions
A
- Isotonic contractions: Muscle size changes when applying force. can be broken into two further categories, concentric (muscle shortening) and eccentric (muscle lengthening).
- Isometric contractions: muscle applies force but there is no change in the length of the muscle.
6
Q
Role of muscles
A
- Agonist: muscle that contracts/shortens when movement occurs
- Antagonist: Muscle that relaxes/lengthens when movement occurs
7
Q
Reciprocal Inhabitation
A
Process of one muscle contracting (agonist) and the other muscle relaxing (antagonist)
