1
Q

What is the sensory register?

A

The first part of the MSM
5 senses
3-4 pieces of info held for around 500ms before lost
When you pay attention it stores into short term memory

Q

What is the short term memory?

A

Second part of MSM
Limited capacity (7+/-2)
Lasts approx 18-30 secs (p+p shows this)
Phonological similarity effect
Memory from here decays if you do not do maintenance rehearsal

Q

What is long term memory?

A

Last memory store which have unlimited capacity/duration.
Ends up here when active recall (elaborative rehearsal) is in place.
Encoding info here depends on rehearsal between new and pre existing knowledge stored there.
You can retrieve memories in this store back to the STM.

Q

Layout of MSM

A

Attention
V Maintenance rehearsal <-retrieval
Stimulus from environment—>SR->. STM->. LTM
^ Elaborative rehearsal
Not recalled, will decay (displacement)

6
Q

What is displacement?

A

STM has reached capacity and cant rehearse new info so it decays

Q

What did Peterson and Peterson (1959) investigate and how?

A

Q

What was the procedure of Peterson and Peterson?

A

Gave people a trigram of 3 consonants to remember, then were told to count backwards in 3s from 100.

Q

What was the results of Peterson and Peterson?

A

-Correct recall of trigram was better after a short interval
-Performance dropped after 15-18 seconds (which is proof of STM duration)

Q

What did bahric et al 1975 test?

A

He tested LTM using a series of memory tests on how many names and faces of students people can remember from leaving school

What happened to Clive wearing?

A

-contacted a brain infection in 1985 (herpes encephalitis)
-caused damage to his hippocampus which is crucial for memory

14
Q

What does Clive wearing case emphasise?

A

The importance of revision in forming LTM and to revisit LTM so decay doesn’t occur

15
Q

Is Clive wearing research useful and why

A

Is not useful as it is a rare case of memory loss.
It limits how far you can generalise MSM
May not explain memory loss for everyone.

16
Q

How did the brain infection affect Clive?

A

-He experiences retrograde and anterograde amnesia
-unable to form new memories therefore lives in him STM.

17
Q

What could Clive still do?

A

his procedural memory was still intact.
-play piano and conduct music and still remembered his wife.
