the multi store model Flashcards

1
Q

name the steps in the MSM?

A
  • info
  • sensory register
  • transfer (rehearsal)
  • LTM

Q

what is the sensory register and its role?

A
  • stimulus from environment enters register
  • has many stores eg. sight and taste
  • info only passes to STM if you’re paying attention

Q

what are the 2 main stores in the sensory register?

  • iconic memory; coded visually

- echoic memory; coded acoustically

Q

explain the STM?

A
  • limited capacity
  • stores little before forgetting
  • if rehearsed, it transfers to LTM

Q

evaluate the STM?

A

WEAKNESS

  • more than 1 type of STM
  • KF had amnesia
  • when digits read to him recall was poor
  • when he read himself recall was better
  • shows STM store for verbal/ non verbal
  • weakness as MSM shows it to be unitary

Q

explain the LTM?

A
  • stores info that has been rehearsed
  • potentially unlimited
  • when we want to recall its transferred to STM

Q

evaluate weakness LTM?

A
  • wEAKNESS
  • model claims LTM is unitary
  • but we have different LTM eg. episodic
  • model is too simple

Q

evaluation to support existence of STM and LTM?

A

STRENGTH
-HM brain surgery w/ hippocampus
-couldn’t form any new LTM but had normal STM
-shows separate stores for STM and LTM
Weakness as his procedural+ semantic were okay but episodic bad=different LTM
