Q

Give a brief explanation of the multi store model and how it works

A

Info detected by sense organs, enters sensory memory, if attention is paid this enters STM. Info from STM can be transferred into LTM if it is rehearsed. If rehearsal doesn’t happen, info is lost through decay.

Q

Describe the case of clive wearing

A

Received brain damage in hippocampus due to viral infection. He could still use STM and remember things for about 30 seconds, but would then forget it all.

Q

How does the MSM apply to the Clive Wearing case

A

It suggests he has trouble rehearsing the information so it cannot get into the LTM

Q

What is the primacy recency effect

A

Primacy words are well rehearsed and make their way into LTM. Recent words are still in the rehearsal loop of STM. Words in the middle are displaced.

Q

Give one strength of the credibility of the study

A

Case studies like Clive Wearing support this idea. MSM helps explains that C.W fails to rehearse information which prevents them from encoding information in LTM.

Q

What is a weakness of the theory

A

Reductionist. We know from the working memory model that the STM is much more complex than shown in MSM.
- Multiple aspects of the STM as well as LTM

LTM also isn’t just 1 aspect, Tulvings explanation of the LTM supports this.

Q

What is 1 objection to this theory (weakness)

A

Case of KF does not support MSM. he was involved in a motorcycle crash. His STM was damaged, couldn’t repeat back more than 2 digits, however he could still add to his LTM.

Q

Give a strength in terms of the applications the theory has in real life

A

MSM tells us how to improve our memory, especially if you’re an eyewitness to a crime.
