The MSK System Flashcards
Name 3 types of cartilage.
- Hyaline cartilage
- Fibrous cartilage
- Elastic cartilage
Describe features of Hyaline cartilage.
- Most widespread and makes up the embryonic skeleton
- Can find it in human adults in free moving joints such as articular cartilage at the end of ribs, nose, larynx, trachea and bronchi.
Describe features of fibrocartilage.
- Strong tissue found predominantly in the intervertebral discs of the spine and menisci of the knee.
- Also found in glenoid and acetabular labra and lining of bony grooves for tendons.
Describe features of elastic cartilage.
- More flexible because it contains elastic fibres and collagen.
- It makes up the external ear, auditory tube of the middle ear and epiglottis.
Name 3 examples of fibrous joints.
- Suture
- Syndesmosis
- Gomphosis
Name 2 examples of cartilaginous joints.
- Synchondrosis
- Symphysis
What is the function of a tendon?
A tendons moves a bone/ structure and connects muscle to bone.
What is the function of a ligament?
Ligaments are connective tissues that bind bones together and stabilises structures.
What is the function of an osteocyte?
Maintains bone tissue.
What is the function of a osteoblast?
Forms bone matrix
What is an osteogenic cell?
A stem cell.
What is the function of osteoclasts?
Dissolve or breakdown old and damaged bone cells
Periosteum vs Endosteum
periosteum covers the outer surface of the bone whereas the endosteum covers the inner surface of bones.
