The Mole Flashcards
Relative atomic mass
The average mass of one atom of that element compared to 1 / 12 of the mass of one carbon-12 atom
Relative molecular mass
The average mass of one molecule of that element or compound compared to 1 / 12 of the mass of one carbon-12 atom
Relative molecular mass of an ionic compound is more accurately known as the relative formula mass
Mole
6 x 10^23 (avogadro’s constant)
number of moles = number of particles / 6 x 10^23
Molar mass
The mass of one mole of atoms of the element
Molar mass = relative atomic mass
Number of moles = number of particles / molar mass
Mass = number of moles x molar mass
Avogadro’s Law
Avogadro’s Law states that equal volumes of all gases, under the same temperature and pressure, contain the same number of particles
Solution
Solute + Solvent = Solution
Concentration
The amount of solute dissolved per unit volume of a solution
Ways to measure the concentration of a solution
- Mole concentration
- Mass concentration
Mole concentration
The number of moles of the solute dissolved in per unit volume of the solution
Mass concentration
The number of grams of the solute dissolved in per unit volume of the solution
Stoichiometry
The relationship between the moles of reactants and products involved in a chemical reaction
