PEASANT
An old word for farmer.
FEUDAL SYTEM
How land was distributed in the Middle Ages.
SERF
A peasant who paid taxes to the lord, king, and farmed their lord’s land.
FREEMAN
Like a serf, but with the right to marriage and travel.
DEMESNE
Percentage of the land the king kept for himself.
VASSALS
King’s followers, Earls, Counts, Bishops, Abbots.
KNIGHTS
Soldiers who rode into battle on horseback.
MEDIEVAL MANOR
Where the lords and peasants lived. A medieval village.
OPEN-FIELD SYSTEM.
A 3 field farming method. Fallow
WIMPLE
What rich women wore on their head.
POTTAGE
A mixture of porridge and vegetable soup.
BAILIFF
The medieval sherriff. Collected taxes and made arrests. He kept the peace. Peasants were scared of him.
STOCKS
A medieval form of punishment. Your head and hands were placed in a wooden block and you had to stand there while people threw rotten vegetables at you.
DUCKING STOOL
A seat in which gossiping women were sat in and repeatedly ducked into a lake.
TITHE
When the peasants had to give one tenth of their crops to the priest.
MOTTE AND BAILEY
The first castle. The motte was the lookout on a hill and the bailey was the residential section.
THE KEEP
The main building of the stone castle where the lord and lady, their families, and some soldiers lived.
BATTLEMENTS
Lookout on top of the keep. Sentries kept guard.
TURRETS
Strong towers along the walls.
DRAWBRIDGE
To cross the moat. Raised during a raid and at night.
PORTCULLIS
A big heavy iron grill in front of the gate. Could be lowered.
RAMPARTS
Ran along the top of top of the walls. Soldiers walked along these.
LATRINES
The toilets of the castle. In the corner of one of the towers of the keep.
FORGE
Where the blacksmith made weapons and horse shoes. In the courtyard.
