The Castle Document. It stated the British were to arrest the leaders of the volunteers. To encourage MacNeill to fight.

The Leaders believed their deaths would motivate Ireland into fighting back against the Brits.

Volunteers and the Irish Citizen’s Army seized key building eg: The GPO, Boland’s Mill, College of Surgeons, Jacob’s Factory.

Thursday the 28th
Pearse evacuated the GPO as it was on fire.
Friday 29th
Pearse ordered the Volunteers to surrender.
RESULTS
500 killed. 2,500 injured.
Why were people angry?
Caused food shortages
Damage to the city
Loss of work
Dead civilians.
The British imposed…
Martial Law (military) Killed 15.
Sympathy grew
For the executed as many (Irish and abroad) believed it was unfair.
Media labelled rising as
Sinn Féinn Rising. They weren’t involved though. Grew more popular as a result.
