The Microscope Flashcards
how are light microscopes used
use light to illuminate the object being studied. they magnify the image a few hundred times
how do light microscopes work
they use a beam of light as the source of illumination and the image will have the same colouring as the object
how do electron microscopes work
these microscopes use beams of electrons to make objects visible. they magnify the image hundreds of thousand of times
what is used to magnify the objects
a stack of glass lenses are used to magnify the objects
how are the lenses supported
the lenses are supported at the both ends of a long tube called the body tube
what is the arm of the microscope
the arm of the microscope is a solid structure supporting the tub
what is the lens closest to the eye called
this is called the eyepiece lens
what is the lens closest to the object called
this is called the objective lens
what does the nosepiece do
the nose piece revolves to allow different objective lenses to be positioned above the object
what is the stage
the platform on which the slide is placed
what is the largest knob called and what is it used for
the coarse focus adjustment knob is used for ‘rough’ focusing ONLY at low power
what is the smaller knob called and what is it used for
the fine focus adjustment knob brings the image into sharper focus and is used with the medium and high objective lenses
what illuminates the specimen
the bulb (or mirror) illuminates the specimen
what controls the light
the diaphragm (below the stage) controls the amount of light passing through the object
