Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Flashcards
what is photosynthesis
photosynthesis is the process in green plants, and certain other organisms, by which organic compounds are synthesized from carbon dioxide and water using light (radiant energy) as an energy source
give examples of organic compounds
carbohydrates, lipids and proteins
what does chlorophyll do to aid photosynthesis
chlorophyll traps radiant energy (light) from the sun and stores it in the bonds between the atoms of organic molecules (eg. glucose) that are synthesised during the photosynthesis reaction. an energy conversion, from radiant energy to chemical potential energy (stored energy) takes place
photosynthesis word equation
carbon dioxide + water + radiant energy
=>
organic foods + oxygen (glucose)
photosynthesis chemical equation
CO2 + H2O + radiant energy
=>
C6H12O6 + O2
photosynthesis balanced equation
6CO2 + 6H2O
=>
C6H12O6 + 6O2
what is cellular respiration
cellular respiration is a chemical reaction that occurs in all living cells.
cellular respiration is a combustion reaction because oxygen is reacted or โburnedโ with glucose to produce energy. like most combustion reactions, the process produces water and carbon dioxide
how does cellular respiration work
organic compounds which contain chemical potential energy in the bonds between their atoms, are broken down to release the stored energy
cellular respiration word equation
glucose + oxygen
=>
carbon dioxide + water + energy
cellular respiration chemical equation
C6H12O6 + O2
=>
CO2 + H2O + ATP
