What caused Japan to want to expand into Manchuria?
The depression caused by the 1929 Wall Street Crash, as it caused depression as it increased poverty and unrest in Japan. Manchuria was rich in minerals, forestry and rich agriculture.
When did Japan attack?
1931, Japanese claimed that there had been an explosion on the railway line at Mukden, blamed the Chinese and gave them an excuse to invade.
How did the league deal with the issue?
After China claimed that Japan had committed an act of aggression, the league formally condemned Japans actions in 1933, and said that Manchuria should be run semi-independent.
How did Japan react?
They simply left the league and later occupied another Chinese province, Jehol.
How did this show the league couldn’t enforce its authority?
A permanent member had committed an act of aggression and got away with it.
What did it show Germany?
They too could get away if they used force.
How did it show sanctions wouldn’t work?
They were discussed but as Japans main trading partner were the USA they wouldn’t be effective.
How did it show they were weak without the USSR?
They were the nearest country to Japan but as they weren’t members they couldn’t send troops.
How else did the crisis effect the league?
They lost their most powerful member in the Far East.
What did it show about France and Britain?
Showed self-interest was more important to them - France wouldn’t send troops, Britain more concerned with the safety of her colonies and trade.
