What was the War Guilt Clause - Article 231?
This was a statement that Germany were responsible for starting WW1. They had to accept responsibility for causing all the loss and damage.
How much did the German have to pay in reparations?
£6.6 billion.
What happened to the Saarland?
It was taken over and run by the League of Nations.
Why was the Saar of any importance?
It was an industrial area.
In 1935 what did the League promise to do?
Hold a plebiscite for whether they should return to German rule.
What were the military restrictions?
100,000 men in the army, conscription was banned, no armored vehicles, submarines or aircraft. Their navy was only allowed six battleships and 30 smaller ships.
What happened to the Rhineland and why?
It was demilitarised because it was on the border between France and Germany. It was a key industrial region producing coal, steel and iron resources.
What happened to Alsace-Lorraine?
It was returned to France.
What happened to the Sudetenland?
It became part of Czechoslovakia, an area of land being built into a new country. It contained 3 million Germans.
Where was Poland created?
From Germany. It was to act as a watchdog on Germany.

Alsace-Lorraine -> France.

What did no Anschluss mean?
Germany were forbidden to unify with any country.
Why were Britain not happy with Freedom of the Seas?
They had a large empire and they needed to protect it.

What was the League’s aim?
Stop war, improve the life and jobs of people around the world, disarmament and to uphold and enforce the Treaty of Versailles.
