The Lymphatic System Flashcards
AIDS
acquired immunodeficiency syndrome– develops due to an infection of HIV– T-cells are not produced normally in the body
Adenitis
inflammation in a lymph node that produces swelling
Adenoid
a series of lymph nodes on the posterior wall
Adenoma
a benign tumor formed from glandular structures found in the epithelial tissue
Adenovirus
a virus that causes conjunctivitis, upper respiratory tract infections, and cystitis among other infections
ALL
acute lymphocytic leukemia– a blood cancer that develops in the bone marrow and influences white blood cells
Allergen
a substance that causes a person to become overly sensitive to certain things
AML
acute myelogenous leukemia– the blood develops excess myeloid cells
Antinuclear Antibody
a test that helps identify any possible autoimmune disorders (ANA)
Anaphylaxis
an immune system reaction that develops when a person encounters an antigen (usually caused by an allergen)
Antibiotic
a protein that is provided in drug form– protein is produced by blood plasma cells and will respond to antigens and other infections
Antibody
a molecule form in immunoglobulin (produced in lymphoid tissue and will attack an antigen)
Antifungal
a drug that destroys fungi
Antigen
a compound that is identified by the immune system and will lead to an immune reaction
Antiviral
a compound that destroys a virus– drug may also prevent the virus from replicating
ARC
AIDS- related complex– refers to the symptoms of a person who has been infected with HIV by has not developed the AIDS virus
ATL
adult T-cell leukemia– cancer that impacts the T-cells w/in the immune system
Autoantibody
an antibody that responds to self-antigens in an organism that produced these compounds
Autoantigens
tissues that can interact with autoantibodies to produce immune responses
Autoimmune
a condition where the immune system triggers a response against tissues within the body
Autoimmune Disorder
a name for a condition where a person’s immune system attacks healthy cells
Autoimmunity
a process where the immune system responds to its own tissue– triggers an autoimmune disorder
Bacilli
a bacterium with a rod shape
Bacteria
a single cell compound
CA
a possible abbreviation that may be used to describe cancer
Candidiasis
an infection that develops in wet skin areas (yeast infection)
Carcinogen
a compound that may trigger the development of some cancers
Carcinoma
a cancerous disease where skin cells mutate
Cervical Cancer
a condition where cancerous cells develop in the cervix
Chemotherapy
a process where chemical compounds are used in the treatment of cancer and other conditions
CLL
chronic lymphocytic leukemia– cancer involves B cells, which are white blood cells, mutating and eventually spreading to many parts of the body
CML
chronic myeloid leukemia– the blood cancer that develops in the bone marrow due to a random chromosome mutation
CSD
cat scratch disease or fever– a condition that may develop due to a scratch or bite from a cat
Cytokines
compounds that are produced by immune system cells to convey information between one another
Cytomegalovirus
CMV– the virus is related to the herpes virus
Dengue
a disease that is transmitted by a bite from the infected Aedes mosquito
DPT
diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus vaccine
EBV
epstein-barr virus– a condition that causes infectious mononucleosis
ELISA
enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay– a test that uses an enzyme in the body to identify the antibodies that may be present in the body
