The Lymphatic System Flashcards
What is the function of the lymphatic system?
- Tissue drainage
- Return of plasma and plasma proteins
- Absorbed fat transport from gut
- Immunity
What is the composition of lymph?
fluid and plasma proteins only, but gain lymphocytes as it flows through Lymphatic capillaries and channels. Fats added in small intestine.
Are lymph nodes isolated or grouped?
They can be either
What is the function of lymph nodes?
filtering interstitial fluid collected from soft tissues and eventually returning it to the vascular system
How is lymph returned to the venous system
All lymph congregate into 2 large lymph ducts (right lymphatic ducts and thoracic ducts)
These empty into the venous system at the Jugular/subclavian junction
How does lymph maintain body fluid levels?
by removing all fluids that leak out of our blood vessels
What the relationship between lymph and detection of infection?
The spleen and thymus are lymphatic organs that monitor the blood and detect and respond to pathogens and malignant cells
what are secondary of metastatic cells?
cancer cells that spread to distant lymph nodes
Where do groups occur?
Groups occur at the bases of major arterial trunks
