Somatic Nervous System Flashcards
What are the major types of neurons?
Bipolar
Multipolar
Pseudounipolar
What are the 4 types g neuroglial cells found in the CNS?
Astrocyles
Microglial cells
Ependymal cells
Oligodendrocytes
What is a dermatome?
Area of skin supplied by a single spinal nerve
What is a myotome?
Part of muscle supplied by a single spinal nerve
What is the clinical relevance of dermatome and myosome?
To test motor or sensory loss of one or more spinal nerve/segments by testing joint movements or an an area of skin in neurological disorders
What is a motor end plate?
Neuromuscular junction
What is the function of the somatic MOTOR fibres?
Regulates voluntary control of body movements via skeletal muscles
What is the function of somatic SENSORY fibres?
Transmits general sensation (pain, touch, temperature,) to the CNS
what are the implications of damage to the spinal nerve?
Damage to the:
Anterior root - causing MOTOR loss
Posterior root - causing SENSORY loss
Spinal nerve - both sensory and motor loss
Ventral ramus - motor ans sensory loss of anterolateral trunk and limbs
Dorsal ramus: motor and sensory loss of the back
What does the spinal nerve exit through?
Intervertebral foramen
What is a somatic reflex arc?
- sensory detection
- interpretation of sensory input in the CNS
- motor response
