The Lymphatic System Flashcards
Four main functions of the lymphatic system?
-Drain excess fluid, returning it back to the circulatory system
-Aid the immune system, collect foreign particles and filter them out by lymph nodes
-Absorb nutrients, collect products of fat digestion from small intestines
-Transport water, cells, immune responses and waste materials
The lymphatic system drains…?
Excess fluid and returns it back to the circulatory system
The lymphatic system aids the…?
Immune system by collecting foreign particles and filtering them out via the lymph nodes
The lymphatic system absorbs…?
Nutrients, collecting products of fat digestion from the small intestines
The lymphatic system transports…?
Water, cells, immune responses and waste materials
Function of lymph vessels?
To transport lymph around the body and carry excess lymph away from tissues
Structure of lymph vessels?
-Low pressure
-Valves to prevent back flow
Where are lymph nodes found?
Usually found where lymphatic vessels join
Functions of lymph nodes?
-Filter out pathogens and foreign bodies to aid immune system
-House/supply lymphocytes
Function of lymphatic ducts?
Drain lymph back into the circulatory system
Which parts of the body are the right and left lymphatic ducts responsible for?
Right: right forelimb, right shoulder and right side of head and neck
Left: rest of the body
What aids lymphatic drainage?
Movement by skeletal muscles
