The Eye Flashcards
Functions of the different parts of the eye.
Iris*
Widens and narrows to control how much light enters the eye
*Part of the middle layer of the eye (uvea)
Ciliary body*
Controls the shape of the lens and delivers oxygen/nutrients to the eye
*Part of the middle layer of the eye (uvea)
Sclera
Tough connective tissue layer that protects the eye, the front forms the transparent cornea
Choroid*
Dark pigmentation lining that contains the blood vessels supplying all of the eye
*Part of the middle layer of the eye (uvea)
Retina
Contain photoreceptor cells, the light entering the eye is focused onto the retina by the lens and transmitted to the optic nerve
Fovea centralis
Most sensitive area of the retina, responsible for the sharpest and most detailed vision
(Cones only)
Blind spot/optic disk
The head of the optic nerve
(No rods or cones present)
Optic nerve
Back of the eye, transmits impulses to the brain from the retina
Suspensory ligament*
Supports the lens
*Part of the middle layer of the eye (uvea)
Cornea
Where light enters the eye
Pupil
The hole in the iris that allows light to enter the eye
Tapetum lucidum*
Iridescent cells that make the most of low light levels by reflecting light back to the photoreceptor cells (night vision)
*Part of the middle layer of the eye (uvea)
Uvea*
