The Brain Flashcards
Three regions of the brain
- Forebrain (cerebrum, hypothalamus)
- Midbrain
- Hindbrain (cerebellum, medulla)
Cerebrum
-Forebrain
-Higher thinking e.g. memory, personality, language, intelligence
Midbrain
-Midbrain
-Pathway for nerve fibres carrying information from hearing and sight senses (motorway!)
Cerebellum
-Hindbrain
-Balance and co-ordination - smooth body movement e.g. walking, running, swimming
Medulla Oblongata
-Hindbrain
-Controls many actions in the body: breathing rate, heart rate, blood pressure
Pituitary Gland*
Releases hormones
*Works with the Hypothalamus
Hypothalamus*
-Forebrain
-Helps to maintain and regulate internal body temperature, also makes hormones: Anti-Diuretic Hormone, Follicle Stimulating Hormone
*Works with the Pituitary Gland
The Pons
-Hindbrain
-Forms a bridge of fibres between the midbrain and medulla oblongata, also controls breathing and heart rate
Limbic System
-Forebrain
-Responsible for behaviour, motivation, long-term memory and olfaction (smell)
Olfactory Bulb
-Forebrain
-Receives information about smells from the nose
Four lobes of the brain
Frontal, Temporal, Parietal, Occipital
Frontal Lobe
Planning and engaging in goal directed behaviour, future consequences of current behaviour and choosing good/bad actions
Temporal
Processes sensory input including: auditory information, language and naming
Parietal
Sensory skills, spatial processing and navigation
Occipital
Visual processing centre
