The Limbic System Flashcards
What is Sommer’s sector?
Part of the hippocampus (CA1) region which is VERY sensitive to hypoxia
Contains a pyramidal layer made of pyramidal neurons
Hippocampus
Serves as the main integrator of the autonomic and endocrine systems
Hypothalamus
believed to participate in memory acquisition, subjective experience of emotions and, via the autonomic nervous system, the visceral manifestations of emotions
Hippocampus
This is a circuit linking the hippocampus with the cingulate cortex
Circuit of papez
What must be intact in order for new memories to be created?
The circuit of papez must be intact in at least one hemisphere in order for new memories to be acquired
Where does the hippocampus send its fibres?
To the mamillary body of the hypothalamus
What is required for learning an association between 2 stimuli (e.g. name and face)?
An intact hippocampus
Required for recalling the memory for a time after it is acquired?
Hippocampus
Anterograde amnesia
Inability to form new memories
Retrograde amnesia
Inability to recall memories before the onset of amnesia
Temporally graded retrograde amnesia
Patient can recall remote events more easily than recent ones
The pyramidal layer in the hippocampus is made of three layers, what are these layers and which one is most sensitive to hypoxia?
CA1, 2 and 3
CA1 is most sensitive to hypoxia
This structure has a role in evaluating the significance of environmental events and the association of environment events and reinforcement
Amygdala
