Pak emerged on map of the world on 14th Aug 1947 (result of partition of Indian subcontinent into 2 sovereign states
Pak initially comprised of two distinct areas; West Pak & East Pak
Dec 1971: East Pak was separated and emerged as an independent state “Bangladesh”
location of Pak
Located between latitude 24° 35’ north and 37° 05’ north and extends from longitude 61° east to 78° east
Total area of pak: 796,096 square km, stretching over 1600km from north to south and 885 km from east to west
Extreme north-east: Pak common border (599km) with China
West: 2611km border with Afghanistan aka Durand line
North West: Wakhan = Narrow strip of Afghan territory separating Pakistan from Tajikistan
South west: common border with Islamic republic of Iran
Southern border = arabian sea
East: common border with India
Pak borders with Afghanistan and India are longer than those with China and Iran

Pak enjoys key position in south asia
Few links by land to northland north west due to large mountain ranges and climate
Khyber pass provides route to Afghanistan
Karakoram highway makes communication with China easier
These areas to north and north west are landlocked, thus seaports of karachi and Gwadar can also serve these areas
Pak’s coastline on arabian sea = central position for trading by sea both w south asia & far east & beyond & w middle east to west
Some air routes between east and west pass thru pak bec of this central position
Jinnah terminal, Karachi could have immense importance as an international airport, though it is greatly underused w Dubai taking over karachi’s natural role
China has emerged as an economic power and trading giant in the international market in recent years
China spends an estimated $1 trillion to improve its trading connection with 70 countries across Asia, Europe, and Africa
Also helps other countries develop their economies e.g to build new factories and improve energy supplies w new wind farms and power stations
