The knee Flashcards
the kneeq
articulation between femur and tibia
little inherent stability
patella enhances mechanical advantage
meniscal cartilage
90% type 1 collagen
arranged in circumferential and radial fibres
cover 2/3rds of the articular cartilage
function: load transmission, enhance articular conformity, distribution of synovial fluid, prevent soft tissue impingement
haemarthrosis

morning stiffness lasting longer than 1 hour
freq fatigue and general malaise often present
OA
usually later in life
slow, over years
joints ache and are tender but have little or no swelling
Sx often start on one side of the body
large weight bearing joints and DIPs
morning stiffness less than one hour, imrpoving before worsening over the course of the day
no systemic Sx
