When was SCOTUS established
SCOTUS was established in 1789. It was created through the Judiciary Act of September 24th 1989.
How are Supreme Court Justices chosen
The President appoints justices based on merit, record, experience and political affiliations. The nominations are confirmed with the advice and consent of the Senate.
Who are the Justices
There are 9 justices. 6 men and 3 women from different ethnicities.
How long can Justices remain
Appointed for life, only ends due to death, resignation, retirement, or conviction of impeachment.
How many cases want to go to the supreme court
Receives around 10,000 petitions for a writ of certiorari and hear about 75-80 cases per year.
How do cases get to the supreme court
A majority of the Justices must feel the case has value, the writ certiorari is issued if there is a large legal issue of constitutional impact a large proportion of the public. Most cases come from federal courts of appeal.
How are cases heard at the supreme court
Cases are presented to a panel of 9, each side has 30 minutes to present their case, meaning a few cases can be heard on the same day. Most cases are considered beforehand as the attorneys provide a skeleton argument for their case.
How do they reach a judgment
After the case the justices deliberate points raised, they then review the case with their clerks and meet a few days later when they vote. The majority judgement is written up and revised by the majority who can make changes to the judgement which is published for the public after the majority are happy with the judgement.
What powers do the supreme court have
The US Congress can only legislate in accordance with the US Constitution. Ultimately, it falls to the Supreme Court to determine whether legislation is constitutional.
How accessible is the supreme court
Paper copies of the judgement are handed to people in the courtroom on the day. Audio files of the argument are made available on the SCOTUS website. Cameras are not allowed. The building is open to the public.
