The interactionist approach Flashcards
What are most explainations of Sz
reductionist- may not be useful for understanding the disorder.
The diathesis stress model
A predisposition to a disorder makes someone more vulnerable but there needs to be stress as a trigger to get the disorder.
Meehl diathesis stress model
Suggested Sz was entirely genetic- a schizogene.
If someone doesn’t have that gene they cannot get the disorder.
In carriers of the gene- chronic stress in childhood and a sz mother could result in development of the disorder.
Tienari et al adoption studies
Only those with high genetic risk and adoptive stress get Sz.
Modern diathesis stress model
Sz is likely to be polygenic
Diathesis may include factors not from birth so people are more vulnerable.
e.g childhood trauma. may result in more adrenaline.
Stress has developed
e.g cannibis affects the D2 receptors so could induce an episode with some people with a diathesis.
Support for childhood trauma as a risk factor
Cannon et al- found link between birth complications and sz in later life. elevated diathesis.
original method is oversimplified
Modern model is more appropriate as accounts for other stressors.
Tarrier et al
3 conditions- mdeication and CBT, medication and talking therapy, medication.
Combination groups showed lower symptoms following trial which reduced hospital adimittings.
