Biological therapies Flashcards
Antipsychotics
any drug which reduces psychotic illness
Tablets, syrups, injections, can relieve symptoms permanently or for life.
Dopamine antagonists.
Typical anti-psychotic drugs example
Chlorpromazine
Typical anti-psychotic drugs
Treats positive symptoms, binds to dopamine receptors to stop stimulating them. Neuron less likely to fire.
Research into typical anti-psychotic drugs
Kaspur et al- aprox. 60-75% D2 receptors need to be blocked to be effective. Can cause side effects as other D2 receptors are blocked. (uncontrolled movement)
Atypical anti-psychotic drugs example
Rispirdone
Atypical anti-psychotic drugs
Treats negative and positive symptoms. Works on dopamine and serotonin, fewer movement side effects as rapidly dissociate.
Side effects
Tardive dyskinsia
Ichy skin
stiff jaw
sleepiness
Effectiveness of drugs
Thornley- studies comparing chloropromozine to control was reviewed. 1121 showed reduced symptom severity and better functioning.
Problems with research
Studies have short term effects and can be exaggerated. Increases size of positive effects. May just reduce severity.
Unethical
Can make people easier to deal with but it can also help partake in other therapies.
