Psychological explainations Flashcards
Family dysfunction explainations
Double bind hypothosis, high expressed emotion
Double bind hypothosis
Bateson et al- parents predispose children to Sz by placing them in a no win situation. Meta communication contradicts the primary communication so children lose grip on reality.
Reserarch support for double bind
Berger et al- asked sz patients about childhood relationships and found more double bind statements than control
Retrospective and self report with people with a difficult perception of reality.
Expressed emotion
Triggers relapse
Hostility, criticism. emotional over involvement.
triggers vulnerable individuals.
Research support fro EE
Brown et al- 58% of high EE families relapsed when sent back (10% control).
EE may have been caused by stress of Sz on family, lack of cause and effect/
May only influence risk EE
Diathesis stress model- tienari
Cognitive explainations
central control, breakdown in meta-representation.Lower levels of information processing in some areas of the brain suggest impaired cognitions
Central control
Disruption in ability to supress automatic response whilst we form deliberate actions. due to disorganised throughts.
strengths of central control
Stirling- sz patients took twice as long as control in streep test- harder to supress initial response.
A breakdown in meta representation
Ability to refelct on our behaviour and interpret others. explains delusions and hallucinations. People with sz have an egocentric bias (view themselves as the centre of the world)
Theraputic applications of cognitive explainations
led to CBT- Understanding abnormalities means we can target, test and normalise the thoughts
Cognitive explainations may be a consequence not a cause
Explainations of onset of illness fall short, likely due to many risk genes and environemntal stressors.
