■ Church played a major role in everybody’s lives pre 1800 (Pre Industrial Britain), but particularly the lives of normal people.
■ Church facilities such as halls provided facilities.
■ Encouraged civilised behaviour – the shift in behaviour from popular recreation to rational recreation (i.e. not drinking/gambling)
■ This Increased attendance at church ceremonies and holy days.
■ The church organised sports teams such as football.
