Define anxiety
A negative aspect of stress characterised by irrational thinking, loss of concentration and fear of failure

What are the factors of competitive trait?
-A disposition to suffer from nerves in most sporting situations
-Consistent
-Stable
-A player worrying before all games
-Anxious behaviour all the time
What are the factors of competitive state?
-Anxiety experienced at a specific time during a competitive situation
-Situation dependant
-Temporary rush of anxiety
-Caused by threatening circumstances
-May be cognitive or somatic

-Physiological responses

What are the pros and cons of using questionnaires to measure anxiety?
Pros:
-Quick, cheap and easy
-Results allow easy comparison
Cons:
-Inaccurate answers to bias / socially accepted answers
-Misinterpretation of questions
-Answers may depend on mood
-Inappropriate questions
-Responses can be changed by the time taken to complete questionnaire
What are the pros and cons of using observation to measure anxiety?
Pros:
-True to life
-If observer knows the performer well accurate results can be made
Cons:
-Time consuming
-May need more than 1 observer
-Behaviour may change if the performer knows they are being observed
-Must know performer for valid results
What are the pros and cons of using physiological measures to measure anxiety?
Pros:
-Are factual and allow comparisons to be made
-Responses can be made in real game situations
Cons:
-Training can be required to use the equipment to measure physiological responses
-Wearing device may restrict performance
-Performer may be affected by wearing the device increasing stress therefore giving invalid results
