Describe the narrator. What is her family situation?

Describe District 12 and the Seam
District 12 is very poor and filled with miners. There is a field beyond the Seam and houses on the edges.
There is a fence on the border

What happened to Katniss’s father?
He was killed in an explosion in the mines where he worked
Why don’t most people have weapons like Katniss’s bow?
They cannot afford them and are unable to make any themselves
Who is Gale?
He is Katniss’s friend and hunting partner, whom she meets in the woods
What is the Hob?
The Hob is the market place for illicit goods
How does the reaping system work?
Once a person turns 12, their name is entered into the reaping once
When they turn 13, twice and son on until they turn 18
If you apply for tesserae when you are 12, your name is put in once more for every member who you provide for
When you turn 13, twice plus double your family members, and so on until 18
Is the reaping system fair?
No. It makes the poor people more vulnerable
What is tesserae?
It is a system whereby a family gets a year’s supply of meagre grain and oil if a child/teen’s name is entered into the reaping pool more than standard
What are the Hunger Games?
An reality TV show where a boy and a girl are chosen from each District to be put into an arena together and fight to the death
What is the protocol for volunteering in District 12?
Anyone is able to volunteer on behalf of a tribute selected in the reaping
What does silence at the reaping mean?
It is solidarity for any young tribute
What is the salute?
The three middle fingers of the left hand are held to the mouth and held out in the direction of a person
What does the salute mean?
It shows support for Katniss, and tells her that she is loved by her District
Who is the male tribute and how does Katniss know him? What is ironic about his selection?
Peeta Mellark. He saved Katniss from starvation in the past when he purposefully burnt some bread so as to give it to her. Peeta saved her life, and now they would be forced to kill one another
What is Katniss’s mother’s mental state? How has it affected Katniss?
She became sullen and depressed after her husband’s death. As a result she stopped providing for her family. Katniss had to take over and grow up very quickly to feed herself and Prim
What was the significance of the dandelion?
The dandelion signified promise, hope and the future
What happens after the anthem?
The tributes are taken into custody
What instructions does Katniss give her family?
She tells her mother to stay focused
She tells Prim to make use of her goat
