What is a sentence?
A self contained group of words that makes sense
What does a sentence have to have?
A subject and a finite verb
What is a finite verb?
A verb that has:
A subject
Number
Tense
What is a participle?
Words that do the job of a verb, and adjective or a noun
What kinds of participles are there?
Present- ends in ing
Past- ends in ed
How do participles become finite verbs?
They must be preceded by an auxiliary verb
What is an infinitive?
A verb preceded by the word “to”
What is an object?
The part of the sentence that receives the verb. It has the verb done to it
How do you identify an object?
Find the verb
Ask who or what is “receiving” the verb
What are transitive verbs?
Verbs that affect an object. The action is being transferred to an object
What is an intransitive verb?
Verbs that do not have objects. They are merely being performed by a subject
How do you identify whether a verb is transitive or intransitive?
If the verb is followed by a noun and if the verb is being done to the noun, then it is transitive.
What is a direct object?
The object that receives the verb
What is an indirect object?
Object that receives the direct object. It is not affected by the verb, rather it is affected by the direct object.
How do you identify the indirect and direct object?
The direct object will have something done to it by the verb. The indirect object will “receive” the direct object.
