Why are long shots used?
Presents the character and a bit of the background
Not much detail
Good for orientation
What can be seen in a medium shot?
A character from the waist up
Why are medium shots used?
To focus on the character
Not really on the background
What can be seen in a close-up shot?
The character’s face
Why are close-up shots used?
To show the emotion of a character
Lots of detail
Makes the character very personal and relatable
What can be seen in an extreme close-up?
Usually focuses on a single feature
What is an extreme close-up used for?
To show a specific aspect of a character’s reaction

High angle
Low angle
Bird’s eye view
Eye level
What is a high angle?
Filmed from above
What is a low angle?
Filmed from below
What is a bird’s eye view?
Filmed from directly above and quite high up
What is an eye level view?
No particular angle
Looking straight into a scene
Why is a high angle used?
To make the character seem small and vulnerable
Removes the character’s power
Why is a low angle used?
Makes the character seem more imposing
Gives the character power
Why is a bird’s eye view used?
To provide the viewer with setting
Why is an eye level used?
Brings the audience into that setting
Makes the character more relatable

Panning
Tilting

What is panning?
When the camera moves from side to side
What is tilting?
When the camera moves up and down
What are dolly shots?
When a camera moves along a track
What is zooming?
When the camera remains stationary, but the lens moves closer to an object
Why is panning used?
Shows setting and context
Helps to show dialogue
Why is tilting used?
To show the size of something
Why are dolly shots used?
Captures rapid movement in a film
Often used to show a large group of assembled people
Why is zooming used?
To focus on specific details

When a person takes an unhealthy interest in watching someone else’s life
