What types of clauses are there?
Independent/main clauses and dependant/subordinate clause
What is the main clause?
A clause with one finite verb that can stand on its own.
What is a subordinate clause?
A clause with a finite verb that cannot stand on its own.
What is a phrase?
A part of a sentence that does not have a finite verb
What are the types of sentences?
Simple
Compound
Complex
Compound-Complex
What does a simple sentence have?
1 finite verb No co-ordinating conjunction No sub ordinating conjunction 1 subject 1 main clause
What does a compound sentence have?
2 or more finite verbs
2 main clauses
Co-ordinating conjunction
2 or more simple sentences joined by a co-ordinating conjunction
A semi colon can be used in place of a coordinating conjunction
What does a complex sentence have?
2 or more finite verbs
1 main clause
1 subordinating conjunction
1 or more subordinate clauses
What does a compound-complex sentence have?
