1956 Hungary - people protest about lack of freedom, food and fuel
Kruschev puts down protest and replaces prime minister with Imre Nagy who was a reformer

A
Nagy made reforms and Khrushchev agreed
USSR troops left
Non communists joined the government
Kruschev saw the problem calmed

A
Nagy wanted to leave Warsaw Pact
Khrushchev did not allow because other states would follow
1000 tanks sent in 4 November
Nagy asked west to help

No help for Nagy from west
New communist government formed under Kadar
Nagy was kidnapped by soviets, tried and executed
Khrushchev said it is a lesson to all socialist countries

A
2500 killed 20,000 wounded 200,000 fled to west USA sent $20m and took 80,000 refugees Un condemned Russia but no action Communism less popular in the west
