A
Allies thought Germans expected an attack near Calais
Allies attacked normandy beaches despite longer sea crossing
Attacked 5 beaches Juno sword gold Omaha Utah
US take Utah and Omaha
British take gold and sword
Canadians take Juno
Landed 135,000 men and 20 vehicles
Sea was rough but allies air and navy power meant crossing was ok
Landings were dangerous especially Omaha beach - saving private Ryan
Other landings free from major casualties.
Invasion took Germans by surprise
Allies could advance towards Paris
