the humanistic approach
- approach to understanding behaviour that emphasises importance of subjective experience + each persons capacity for self determinism
free will in the humanistic approach
- people are self determining and have free will
- we are all all ‘active agents’ - ability to determine own development
self actualisation
desire to grow physiologically + fulfil full potential
- upper most level of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
- all other levels of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs must be fulfilled before self actualisation is possible

- aim of Rogerian therapy
- state of congruence - ideal self + actual self match

where a parent places limits or boundaries on their love of their child

- rogers argued that many of the problems we face as adults come from childhood

- not reductionist - doesn’t break behaviour down. advocates ‘holism’ - focus on subjective experience
- positive approach - ‘bringing person back into psych’
- cultural bias - collectivist cultures might not identify with self actualisation
