The Human Digestive System Pt2 Flashcards
When food is taken into the mouth
Ingestion
What is saliva used for?
To bind the chewed food and make the bolus smooth to make swallowing easier
Secrete hormone directly into the bloodstream
Functions of the tongue
It moves food from one side of the mouth to the other
Pushes food between the teeth
Mixes food with saliva
Pepsin
It will digest the protein in an inactive form to polypeptide
Lipase
Digests fat to fatty acids and glycerol
Functions of the liver
Secretes bile that plays a role in physical breakdown of fats
Helps to maintain homeostasis by releasing nutrients into the bloodstream or withdrawing nutrients from it
Stores glycogen
What is the main function of bile
Emulsifies fats, breaks it up into small droplets
Neutralises acidic chyme
How may the pancreas act as an endocrine gland
Because the hormones are secreted directly into the bloodstream
Hormone produced by the pancreas
And what it does?
Insulin
Converts excess glucose into glycogen and it makes cell membranes more permeable .
Glucagon
a hormone that tells cells in your liver and muscles to convert glycogen into glucose and release it into your blood so your cells can use it for energy
