The Holocaust Flashcards
How were German jews affected when the Nazis came to power?
Nazi’s wanted “pure Germans” with blond hair and blue eyes. There lives were restricted with many laws such as limited number of jewish students in schools and universities, no right to vote and prohibited to have sexual relations with “pure Germans”. Jews were also forced to wear yellow starts in order to indicate their religion as well as their passport being stamped with a large J at the front. There were many horrible Jewish cartoons that always showed them as ugly, bad people.
How were the lives of jews in countries occupied by the Nazis?
Similar to those in Germany. To get a visa to another country, lots of money had to be paid.
How did the Nazis treatment of jews change in world war two?
Jews were forced into towns or villages called ghettos where many families were forced to live together in small, crowded houses. Food their was very limited. Jews that were capable of working were used for salve labour, and those who couldn’t work usually ended up starving to death. Sometimes jews were killed on the way to the ghettos.
Who were the resistance fighters?
Jewish groups that took to the countryside where they blew up railway lines and attacked German soldiers. Many Jews in Poland escaped from the ghettos but were later found by troops of nazi’s and taken to concentration camps or killed instantly.
What happened in uprisings in camps?
Another way jews resisted was by uprisings in the camps. A man in Terblinka managed to get supplies to set the camp on fire allowing many jews to escape and killing about 150 camp guards.
What is individual defiance?
It is that the jewish tried to blend in with “pure germans” with help from non-jewish. They did this in order to stay in their homes and not be taken out to the concentration camps. They often hid in their non-jewsih friends’ homes.
What happened in ghetto revolts?
Armed up risings took place in which the jews threatened the Nazi’s. But then, the Nazis started a new tactic to keep control in which they went to hospitals and killed those who were ill and jewish. This forced jewish to stop the up risings.
Who was to blame for the holocaust?
Hitler- he did not personally kill any jews but he was the one to give all the orders and made many speeches and laws against Jews.
Goebbels- he controlled all propaganda and used newspapers and films to spread anti-jews ideas
Herman Goering- Marshal of the Reich. He wrote the order for leading Nazi’s to develop “ the final solution to the Jewish problem”.
Reinhard Heydrich- Organised the ghettos and led the planning of the death camps and methods of killing in the gas chambers.
Camp commandants- controlled the camps and what happened in them
SS camp guards- carried out orders from the Nazi’s, ran the camps and recruited men from the countries Germany occupied.
Engineers- designed the gas chambers even though they all knew their purpose
Businesses- used slave labour
