The hip extensors Flashcards
what muscles form the hip extensors?
BF
Gluteal Maximus
Semimembranosus
Semitendinosus
State the muscle attachments and actions of BF
Origin: long head-ischial tuberosity
Short head- linea aspera and supracondylar ridge
Flexes the knee and laterally rotates the knee. The long head extends the hip
The muscle attachments and actions of gluteal Maximus
Origin: posterior outer surface of ilium, sacrum and coccyx
Insertion: iliotibial band and gluteal tuberosity of femur
Extends the trunk and thigh and laterally rotates the thigh
Muscle attachments and action of semimembranosus
Origin: ischial tuberosity
Insertion: posterior aspect of the medial tibial condyle
Extends the hip, flexes and medially rotates the knee
Muscle attachments and action of semitendinosus
Ischial tuberosity and insertion is from medial surface of the proximal tibia
Extends the hip and flexes and medially rotates the knee
State the nerve supply of these muscles
Semimembranosus and semitendinosus have the sciatic nerve supply of L5, S1 and S2
BF sciatic nerve L5, S1-S3
Gluteal Maximus inferior gluteal nerve L5, S1, S2
