The hip abductors Flashcards
What muscles form the hip abductors?
Gluteus medius and minimus
Piriformis
Tensor fascia Latae
Muscle attachments, actions and nerve supply of gluteus medius
Originates from outer surface of ilium and inserts into lesser trochanter
It abducts and medially rotates the pelvis (ant fibres)
Superior gluteal nerve L4-L5, S1
Muscle attachments action and nerve supply of gluteus minimus
Originates from outer surface of the ilium and inserts into the anterior surface of the greater trochanter
Abducts and medially rotates the pelvis (ant fibres)
Superior gluteal nerve L4-L5, S1
Muscle attachments actions and nerve supppy of TFL
Originates from the ASIS and iliac crest and inserts via the iliotibial band and Gerdy’s tubercle lateral aspect proximal tibia
Flexes and medially rotates the thigh
Superior gluteal nerve L4 L5 S1
Muscle attachments actions and nerve supply of Piriformis
Originates from internal surface of the sacrum and gluteal surface of ilium and inserts in the greater trochanter
Lateral rotation (deep lateral rotator) and abduction of the flexed hip
1st 2nd sacral nerves
