Ligaments of the Hip Joint Flashcards
Name 4 ligaments of the hip joint and their location
Iliofemoral ligament (anterior) Pubofemoral ligament(anterior) Ischiofemoral ligament(posterior) Ligamentum Teres (interior)
State the attachments and action of the iliofemoral ligament
Formed by two bands, superior and inferior
Apex: AIIS
Base: to the intertrochanteric line
Superior band limits adduction and extension
Inferior band limits abduction and extension
State the attachments of the pubofemoral ligament
Base: from the pubic eminence
Apex: to the capsule and medial band of the iliofemoral ligament and intertrochanteric line
What does the pubofemoral ligament limit?
It limits extension and abduction
State the attachments of the ischiofemoral ligament and its limitations
From: inferior aspect of the ischium
To: The capsule and the anterior part of the greater trochanter deep to the iliofemoral ligament.
It limits extension and medial rotation
Where is the ligamentum Teres located?
From a pit (fovea) in the head of the femur to the acetabular notch and transverse acetabular ligament
What is the function of the in inguinal ligament?
It connects the ASIS to the pubic tubercle
What factors contribute to hip joint stability?
Strong surrounding ligaments
Cup shaped acetabulum deepened by the acetabular labrum
Strong capsule
Vacuum shaped effect of the ball and socket joint
Oblique angle of femoral head
Arrangement of powerful surrounding muscles
What are the limitations to ROM?
Tension of antagonists
Soft tissue apposition
Tension of ligaments limit range
Relative congruency of the articular surfaces
State the hip Range of Motion for flexion and extension
Flexion- 100-120 degrees
Extension- 15-20 degrees
What contributes to maximum to hip joint stability?
Close-pack position of the hip.
Max ext
Medial rotation and abduction
Describe the Sacroiliac-iliac Joint
Synovial, plane joint
Ridged articular surfaces
Joint mutation: nutation and counter-nutation
State the attachments of the SIJ
Attached to the margins of the articular surfaces of sacrum and ilium
Lined with synovial membrane
State the attachment and function of the Ventral sacroiliac-iliac ligament
From the lateral sacrum to the medial aspect of the ilium.
Thickening of the capsule
Provides anterior stability
State the attachment and limitations of the sacrtuberous ligament
From PSIS, Sacral tubercles, lateral margins of sacrum and coccyx to the ischial tuberosity and ischial ramus.
It limits nutation of the sacrum and posterior rotation of the ilium
