The Heart Blood And Vessels Flashcards
We have a double circulatory system. Explain what they are and what they do
-Pulmonary circulation.
Transports blood to and from lungs to exchange O2 and CO2 with air
-Systemic circulation
Transports blood to and from body to exchange O2 and CO2 with bodily cells
How do we control our heartrate
- we have osmoreceptors in aorta that sense CO2 levels
- cardiac centre in medulla receives information via the sensory nerve
- cardiac centre sends impulses via accelerator or decelerator nerves
- pacemaker reacts and increases or decrease his heart rate and force of heartbeat
Why is a blockage of the coronary artery so bad
- Blood supply to area of heart muscle cut off
- Less oxygen and glucose reaches heart muscle
- Area of heart muscle cannot respire
- Heart attack (angina)
Explain a bit about the artery
- Takes oxygenated blood away from the heart to the body
- High blood pressure
- Oxygenated blood
Explain a bit about the vein
Brings deoxygenated blood to heart from body
- Low blood pressure
- Deoxygenated blood
Explain about the capillaries
Small vessels between arteries and veins for exchange of O2 and CO2 and nutrients with cells
-Low blood pressure
How much of the blood is plasma, white blood cells and platelets, red blood cells
- Plasma (55%)
- White blood cells and platelets (
What is plasma
The liquid part of the blood
- contains clotting factors, hormones, antibodies…
What is white blood cells
Either leukocyte or platelets
- leukocyte- defence against disease, phagocytes ingest pathogens. Lymphocytes produce antibodies
- platelets-thrombocytes are involved in blood clotting
What does the red blood cell do
Transports oxygen.
Vein……
Artery……
Vein to the heart
Artery from the heart
