Life Process Flashcards
What do mitochondria do
They carry out most of the reactions of respiration to release energy that the cell can use. Mitochondria are found often in muscle and nerve cells which need lots of energy.
What is a cell wall mainly made up of?
Cellulose
What is a permanent vacuole made of
Cell sap which is a store of dissolved sugars, mineral ions and other dilutes
Why are some chloroplast green
Cause they contain chlorophyll
What is diffusion
The movement of molecules down a concentration gradient
What causes diffusion
It happens because of kinetic energy of the particles
What is osmosis
When water moves across cell membranes when the total concentrations of all dissolved substances inside and outside the cell are different
How does the membrane affect osmosis
It has to semi permeable - must be permeable to water but not to some other solutes
What do enzymes do
Control the chemical reactions that go on in the cytoplasm
