The Heart Flashcards
What is the circulatory system made up of?
The heart , blood vessels and blood
Which side has the deoxygenated and oxygenated blood?
The right side has deoxygenated and the left side has oxygenated blood
What is the heart?
A pumping organ that keeps the blood flowing around the body.
What are the walls of the heart made from
They are made from muscle tissue
What do the heart valves do
Makes sure that blood flows in the right direction to prevent it flowing backwards
What are the upper and lower chambers
The upper chambers are the atria and the lower chambers are the ventricles.
Where does blood flow into?
Vena cava and the pulmonary vein
What happens when the atria contracts
The blood is pushed into the ventricles
What happens when the ventricles contract?
Blood is forced into the pulmonary artery and aorta and out of the heart
How does blood flow through organs and returns?
The blood flows to organs though arteries and returns through veins
What is the coronary arteries?
They are arteries that branch off the aorta and surround the heart making sure it gets all the oxygenated blood it needs
What is a pacemaker?
It is a group of cells that control the heart rate
Where is the pacemaker?
It is located in the right atrium wall.
What does the pacemaker cells do?
The produce a small electric impulse that spreads to the surrounding muscle cells causing them to contract
What is an artificial pacemaker?
It is used to control heartbeat if the natural pacemaker cells don’t work properly
