More On Enzymes And Digestion Flashcards
What do the salivary glands do?
They produce amylase enzyme in the saliva.
What is another word for the gullet
The oesophagus
What do the liver do
It is where bile is produced. Bile neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fats.
What does the stomach do?
Produces the protease enzyme, pepsin
Produces Hydrochloric acid to kill bacteria and to give the right pH for the protease enzyme to work.
What does the gall bladder do
It is where bile is stored before it is released into the small intestine
What does to pancreas do
It produces protease, amylase and lipase enzymes. It releases these into the small intestine.
What does the small intestine do?
It produces protease amylase and lipase enzymes to complete digestion. It is where the digested food is absorbed out of the digestive system into the blood.
What does the large intestine do
Where excess water is absorbed from the food
What does the rectum do
Where the faeces are stored before they leave through the anus
Name the three parts of the digestive system that produce protease enzymes? (3 marks)
Stomach
Pancreas
Small intestine
