Enzymes And Digestion Flashcards
What does Carbohydrases convert Carbohydrates into?
They convert Carbohydrates into Simple Sugars
What does Amylase break down Starch into?
It breaks down Starch into Maltose
Where is Carbohydrases/Amylase made in?
Salivary glands
Pancreas
Small intestine
What do Proteases convert Proteins into
They convert Proteins into Amino Acids
Where is Proteases made in
1) Stomach/Pepsin
2) Pancreas
3) Small Intestine
What do Lipases convert Lipids into?
They convert Lipids into Glycerol and Fatty Acids
Where are Lipases made in?
Pancreas
Small intestine
Where is bile produced?
In the liver
Where is it stored in and released to?
It is stored in the gall bladder and released into the small intestine
What does bile do in the stomach
It neutralises the stomach acids (as it is alkaline) and makes conditions alkaline.
What does bile do to fats?
It emulsifies fats into tiny droplets giving lipase a bigger surface area of fat to work on making its digestion faster
Bile is a product of the liver. Describe and Explain it’s time in digestion. (4 marks)
Bile is alkaline so it neutralises the stomach acid and makes conditions in the small intestine alkaline. The enzymes of the small intestine work best in these alkaline conditions. It also emulsifies fats/breaks down fat into tiny droplets. This gives a bigger surface area of fat for the enzyme lipase to work on, making digestion faster.
