The Heart Flashcards
Location and Size of Heart
Located in mediastinum. 2/3 of mass left of the midline
Pericardium
Protective double-walled covering. Fused to diaphragm and great vessels of the heart
What are the parts of the Pericardium
Fibrous Pericardium, Serous Pericardium, Pericardial Cavity
Fibrous Pericardium
Outer dense C.T. layer. Protects, anchors, and prevents from overfilling
Serous Pericardium
Thin, wet, double layered. Contains Visceral layer(aka, outer layer of epicardium & composed of fibroelastic tissue) & Parietal layer(inner surface of fibrous pericardium)
Pericardial Cavity
between the two serous layers. Thin film of pericardial fluid
Heart Wall is Composed of What 3 Layers?
Endocardium, Myocardium, Epicardium
Endocardium
Squamous endothelium cells
Myocardium
Cardiac muscle tethered together by C.T. fibers
Epicardium
Visceral Serous Pericardium
What are the Heart Chambers & How are they separated?
Separated by inatrial and interventricular septa. Right atrium, Left atrium, Right ventricle, Left ventricle
Right Atrium
Entrance of SVC & IVC. Contains auricles, fossa ovalis, interatrial septum, pectinate muscles, & tricuspid valve
Auricles
Increase atrial volume (flat dog ear)
Fossa Ovalis
depression, closes before birth
Interatrial Septum
Wall separating the right and left atria
Pectinate Muscles
ridges of muscles in walls of right atrium and both auricles
Tricuspid Valve
3 flaps on valve. Closes when ventricle contracts
Left Atrium
entrance of pulmonary veins. Contains bicuspid valve
Bicuspid (Mitral) Valve
2 flaps. Valve between left atrium & left ventricle
Right Ventricle
`Forces blood into pulmonary trunk. Low in oxygen. Contains Pulmonary semilunar valve, papillary muscles, chordar tendineae, & trabeculae carneae
Pulmonary Trunk
Branches into right and left pulmonary artieries
Pulmonary Semilunar Valve
pressure cause the opening and closing. Blood flows through here
Papillary Muscles
Contracts at same time as right ventricle
Chordae Tendineae
prevents prolapse of valve. Contracts same time as ventricle does so that it stays shut
