The Heart Flashcards
This deck will explore the anatomical features of the heart.
The heart
This is the muscle at the center of the circulatory system, pumping blood throughout the body
Pericardium
This is a double-layered membrane that surrounds and protects the heart
Left and right atria
These are the upper chambers of the heart
Left and right ventricles
These are the lower chambers of the heart
Cardiac septum
This is the wall of muscle which separates the left and right sides of the heart
Tricuspid valve
This valve regulates flow between the right atrium and right ventricle
Pulmonary valve
This valve regulates flow of blood from the right ventricle to the pulmonary arteries, which oxygenate the blood in the lungs
Mitral valve
This valve regulates flow of oxygen-rich blood from the lungs pass from the left atrium to the left ventricle
Aortic valve
This valve regulates flow of oxygen-rich blood pass fro the left ventricle to the aorta
Sinoatrial node (SA)
This node, located at the top of the right atrium, is the starting point for the electrical impulses in the heart; it is sometimes called the heart’s “natural pacemaker”
Atrioventricular node (AV)
This node acts as a relay station to regulate the electrical signal sent to the atria and ventricles
Bundle of His
This is the collection of nerve fibers directly above the ventricular split
Left and right bundle branches
These are the branches which split from the Bundle of His and extend down around the ventricles
Purkinje fibers
These are the fibers which separate from the bundle branches in the heart to allow the electrical impulses to reach more muscle
Arteries
These are the vessels through which oxygenated blood is pumped through the body
