The Heart Flashcards
1
Q
Structures of the heart
A
- Superior vena cave
- Inferior vena cava
- Right atrium
- Tricuspid valve
- Right ventricle
- Pulmonary valve
- Pulmonary artery
- Pulmonary veins
- Left atrium
- Bicuspid valve
- Left ventricle
- Aortic valve
- Aorta
- Papillary muscles
- Chordae tendineae
2
Q
What is the myocardium?
A
The muscular wall of the heart
3
Q
Function of the myocardium
A
Contracts to force blood out of the heart to the lungs/body
4
Q
What is the pericardium?
A
Smooth outer membrane of myocardium
5
Q
Function of the pericardium
A
Lubricates heart to prevent friction during heart activity
6
Q
3 stages in the cardiac cycle
A
- Diastole
- Atrial systole
- Ventricular systole
7
Q
Describe diastole
A
- Both the atria and ventricles are relaxed
- So the atria and ventricles fill passively
- Atrioventricular valves are open
- Semi-lunar valves are closed
8
Q
Describe atrial systole
A
- Semi-lunar valves are closed
- Atrioventricular valves are open
- The atria contracts, forcing blood into the ventricles
9
Q
Describe ventricular systole
A
- Ventricles contract simultaneously
- Atrioventricular valves are closed
- Semi-lunar valves are open
- Blood enters the pulmonary artery and the aorta
10
Q
Cardiac output equation
A
Q = SV x HR
11
Q
Cardiac output definition
A
The volume of blood pumped by the heart in a minute
12
Q
What causes the heart to contract?
A
- The sino-atrial node generates an impulse
- This causes atrial excitation & contraction
- The impulse is delayed at the atrioventricular node
- The impulse is passed to the apex of the heart through the bundles of His
- Impulse is transmitted to the Purkinje fibres
- This causes ventricular excitation & contraction
