A
The total amount of air exhaled so therefore measures the volume of the lungs

Method of using a spirometer
A
- Breathe in as much air as possible
- Take an extra breath
- Blow into the machine for as long as possible
- Exhale extra breath to make sure as much air as possible has left the lungs

A
Can be used to diagnose, monitor and check severity of lung problems
