Q

Describe the passage of blood through the body:

A

The vena cava carries deoxygenated blood from the body to the right atrium. The right atrium contracts, pushing the blood to the right ventricle, past a valve, which prevents backflow. The right ventricle contracts, pushing the blood through the pulmonary artery that goes to the lungs through a valve. In the lungs, the blood becomes oxygenated, and reenters the heart through the pulmonary vein to the left atrium. The left atrium contracts, pushing the blood through a valve to the left ventricle. This contracts, pushing the blood through the aorta to the rest of the body.

Q

Advantages of artificial hearts ♥️:

A

Unlikely to be rejected and keeps you alive

17
Q

Disadvantages of artificial hearts ♥️:

A

Temporary, doesn’t work as well, infection risk, could wear out/fail, have to take drugs💊 to thin your blood

18
Q

What is an artificial heart valve:

A

They replace leaky valves

19
Q

What are the 2 types of artificial valves:

A

Biological and man-made

20
Q

What are the advantages of biological valves:

A

You don’t have to take medication

21
Q

What are the disadvantages of biological valves:

A

They only last 12 to 15 years

22
Q

What are biological valves made of:

A

Pig 🐷 , cattle 🐮 or human 😨valves

23
Q

What are the advantages of mechanical valves:

A

They last a long time

24
Q

What are the disadvantages of mechanical valves:

A

You need to take medication 💊

25
Q

What are mechanical valves made of:

A

Titanium or polymer

26
Q

What is artificial blood:

A

Artificial blood is a substitute, like a salt solution it gives the body time to produce blood cells

27
Q

What are the advantages of artificial blood:

A

You can store it for a long time, it is sterilisable, there is no need to match blood types

28
Q

What are the disadvantages of artificial blood:

A

There can be side-effects, it’s expensive💷, it is quicker to break down

29
Q

What are artificial pacemakers:

A

They correct irregularities in the heart rate and send electrical ⚡️impulses to your heart to make it beat

30
Q

Advantages to artificial pacemakers:

A

They only work when they need to

31
Q

Disadvantages to artificial pacemakers:

A

They need regular check ups

32
Q

What is bypass surgery:

A

When a surgeon replaces blockages with bits of vein from elsewhere in your body

33
Q

What are advantages to bypass surgery:

A

It works all the time🕑

34
Q

What are the disadvantages to bypass surgery:

A

It’s expensive 💷and you need general anaesthetic
